    Yoga Styles

  1. There are many different styles of yoga. Some yoga studios and classes focus on gentle yoga poses for beginners or those with health issues. These classes are well-suited for those just starting out in yoga, those with sports injuries or illness and those who primarily want relaxation from their yoga practice. Look for "restorative" or "gentle" yoga if that describes you. Hatha yoga is a broad term that technically describes all of the physical practice of yoga as we think of it. However, some yoga teachers will use this term to describe their classes. These classes may be geared differently for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Discuss your level with the instructor to determine whether this style is for you. Ashtanga yoga or "power" yoga will likely reflect a more vigorous and athletic style. If you want to sweat a lot and build flexibility quickly, these styles might work for you. Finally, Bikram yoga is not for the faint of heart. It uses a prescribed sequence of 26 poses, completed in 90 minutes in a 105-degree heated room. Though all of these yoga styles will draw on the same poses and foundation of beliefs, you should choose the one that sounds best-suited to your fitness level, style and aspirations.
  2. Yoga Habits

  3. The best yoga exercise routine is also one that is done consistently and with dedication. Many people decide to do yoga on occasion, but doing so will not lead to the greatest benefits. It's best to try to commit yourself to a regular yoga schedule so you can begin to see the changes in your flexibility, strength and state of mind. Additionally, invest in a good mat for use during your yoga practice. Though many studios provide mats or will rent them to you for a small fee, it's best to have your own so you can practice at home and ensure you have a sanitary surface for your practice. A thick mat can provide extra padding and comfort, though it is also heavier to carry to class.
  4. Yoga Cautions

  5. You should be careful when beginning your yoga practice, regardless of which yoga style and exercises you choose to perform. The best yoga exercise for you is one that is challenging but not damaging to your body. Some people find twists and back bends extremely uncomfortable and might have lasting pain from doing them, for example, while for others these difficult poses are enjoyable and refreshing. A good instructor will help you find the best exercises for you, and will help you modify the poses to your current fitness level and for your unique body and concerns.
