Tips on Using a Face Steamer

Steaming your face opens your pores, deep cleans your skin and increases blood circulation. Using a face steamer regularly can leave your skin glowing. A 20-minute steaming session should be done once weekly to keep your skin free from breakouts and clogged pores.

    1. Preparation

      • Wash your skin before using a face steamer. Remove dirt, oil and makeup by washing with gentle face soap and water. Tie your hair back or use a headband so your hair will be away from your face. Set your face steamer on a table or any place where you will be comfortable sitting for 20 minutes. Fill the reservoir with water to the fill line. Use distilled water if directed to do so by the manufacturer. Do not overfill as the water might bubble over when it gets hot. Have a bottle of water, towels and anything else you might need nearby so you don't have to get up and down during your steam session.

      Steaming

      • Place your forearm into the steam first just to make sure it is not too hot. If it feels OK, then slowly move your face into the steam, but if the steam feels hot inside your nose, you should adjust the temperature and wait a few minutes for it to cool. Always check the temperature of the steam in this way before using your face steamer so you don't get burned. If your face steamer does not have a built-in canopy for holding the steam around your face, you can make your own by placing a towel over your head and the steamer. This creates a tent that keeps the steam against your skin. It takes a few minutes for your pores to warm enough to open up and release debris. Set a timer for 20 minutes so you don't have to constantly check the clock.

      After Steaming

      • Turn off your face steamer and unplug it before finishing your skin-care treatment. Using warm water, wash your face again to remove oil and dirt that have been released from your pores. Cold water will cause your pores to close, so save cold water until the end. After steaming is a good time to use a skin exfoliating lotion or face mask. Wash your face one last time and rinse with cold water. End your facial steaming treatment by applying your favorite facial moisturizer.
