Gout Diet Recipes

Gout is a type of arthritis whose acute symptoms occur suddenly. These symptoms, which stem from a buildup uric acid, include intense pain in certain joints and surrounding areas combined with inflammation. Medications plus dietary modifications can help reduce the occurrence of this disease. These dietary modifications include decreasing the amount of meat and alcohol you consume and increasing the amount of grains and low-fat dairy products you eat. Although studies aren't conclusive, coffee, cherries and moderate amounts of vitamin C may also help ward off gout. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Recipe 1: Cherry Smoothie

    • This recipe is great for breakfast or snacks. Combine two small bananas, one cup dark pitted cherries, one cup skim milk, one cup orange juice and a few ice cubes in a blender. Blend on high speed until the ice has been crushed and the consistency of the drink is creamy. This smoothie provides a tasty serving of cherries, as well as vitamin C.

    Recipe 2: Whole Grain Pancakes

    • Whole grain pancakes are a good source of fiber. Using a large bowl, combine one cup whole wheat flour, one fourth cup cornmeal, one half cup rolled oats, one teaspoon baking powder, three tablespoons brown sugar and one half teaspoon baking soda. Stir the ingredients together. In a smaller bowl beat one egg and add two cups of buttermilk. Stir the liquid mixture into the large bowl of dry ingredients. Lightly coat a frying pan or griddle with a little vegetable oil and place on medium heat. Once the pan is heated, drop large spoonfuls of the batter onto the pan. When the batter begins to bubble, flip the pancake in order to brown on both sides. Serve with syrup once the pancake is done.

    Recipe 3: Gazpacho

    • Gazpacho is a type of soup that contains a considerable amount of vitamin C and possibly can reduce the amount of uric acid in the body. In order to make this soup, first chop the following vegetables: two cups of tomatoes, one half cup of bell pepper, two-thirds cup of cucumbers and one half of a medium sized onion. Add two cloves of garlic, four teaspoons of wine vinegar, four teaspoons of olive oil and one cup of water to the mixture. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend on medium speed until smooth. Add small amounts of sugar, salt and pepper to taste. Serve chilled.
