Birthday cupcakes are a playful replacement for the traditional layered birthday cakes. Most attendees at a birthday party usually expect a traditional sheet cake or multi-layered cake. Surprising everyone with individual birthday cupcakes with various sprinkles is a fun way to get everyone in the birthday spirit.

    Color Themed Sprinkled Birthday Cupcakes

  1. Pick certain colored sprinkles for birthday cupcakes that match the theme of the birthday. For example, if the birthday them is Elmo, choose red sprinkles. You can even create an Elmo face on the cupcake. With black sprinkles, create the eyes. Red sprinkles should be used for the face and orange sprinkles for his round nose to create fun birthday cupcakes made with sprinkles.
  2. DYI Sprinkle Party

  3. Consider a "DYI" or "do it yourself" sprinkle cupcake birthday party for a kid's birthday. Have chocolate and vanilla cupcakes iced with vanilla icing set out on a table. Have bowls of different sprinkles out for the kids to decorate their own cupcakes. Choose a rainbow of colors and include a spoon in each bowl for each child to collect sprinkles for their cupcakes.
Have them sit down at their places and decorate their cupcakes. Have prizes for the best decorated cupcake with plenty of runner up prizes so everyone has a chance to win something. You can create categories like prettiest cupcake, ugliest cupcake, scariest cupcake and most creative cupcake.
  4. Stencils with Sprinkles

  5. Create elegant designs with sprinkles on birthday cupcakes with cardboard stencils. For example, for a flower themed cupcake, cut out a simple shape of a daisy head from a 6" x 6" piece of cardboard. Ice the cupcake in vanilla icing. Gently place the cardboard on top of the iced cupcake and sprinkle a bright colored sprinkle onto the design of the stencil. Remove the stencil and start with another cupcake.
Keep the stencil designs simple like silhouettes of flowers, a cat or dog, the sun, the moon or balloons. White icing is best as the sprinkles show up with more drama against the white icing.
  6. Icing Selection

  7. Choose a butter cream icing to hold the sprinkles best. Fondants are stiffer and may not hold sprinkles as well as butter cream icings. Marzipan or gum-paste is also not recommended for using with sprinkles since these mediums are also stiff.
