Though this may not be a favorite topic for most men, impotence is a common male problem. Often referred to as an erectile dysfunction, age is the greatest contributing factor to this condition, but a man of any age can experience this inability to achieve or maintain an erection. When left to deal with this an erectile dysfunction, men can now turn to a number of different treatments to help with this upsetting condition.

    Oral Medications

  1. Of all the treatments for impotence, oral medications are by far the most commonly used. Medications, like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra, only need to be taken when you want to achieve an erection, making them a useful aid for many men. During times of intimacy, take the pill 30 to 60 minutes before sexual intercourse to achieve an erection. For most men, the effects of these pills can last anywhere between two to four hours. However, sexual stimulation is still needed to achieve and maintain this erection, so make sure to take the medication within the time span needed.
  2. Hormone Therapy

  3. While many men find oral medications beneficial, you may not experience success from or be able to take this form of treatment. This doesn't mean that there you're out of luck, as some men find a form of hormone therapy more useful. With hormone therapy, there are two basic forms of treatment--testosterone and prostaglandin E. In testosterone therapy, men with an insufficient level of testosterone are given a supplemental form of this hormone, which can help you achieve and maintain an erection. In prostaglandin E therapy, a synthetic version of this hormone is administered to the penis, through injection or suppository, to increase blood flow and prompt an erection.
  4. Pumps

  5. For some men, the use of a pump is a better option, especially when money is an issue. To use this form of treatment, place the tube of the pump over the penis where the air is removed through a vacuum. When this happens, blood is manually forced to engorge the penis, causing an erection.
  6. Surgery

  7. When other methods of treatment have failed, consider talking to your doctor about surgical options to help with impotence. Different procedures are available, but the most common involve implants. With this form of treatment, a device is placed within the penis to manually create rigidity within the shaft.
  8. Therapy

  9. While not as common as other treatments, therapy can be helpful with some cases of impotence. In this situation, the condition isn't caused by an actual physical problem, but more of a psychological issue, such as depression or even stress. Progress is tracked by yourself and your doctor as you treat the condition causing the erectile dysfunction.
