- There are three different types of cards in Pounce. One set is room cards, another set is cat cards, and then there is the "Bruno The Bulldog" card as well. When setting the game up the cat cards and room cards should be separated into separate piles. The 25 room cards should then be split into five face up piles, one pile for each room depicted on the cards, each room having five cards in the pile. Each player then should receive five cat cards of the same color. Each of these cat cards matches one of the five rooms on the room cards. The Bruno card is given to one player chosen at random to start the game. In subsequent rounds the player to the left of the last player to have the Bruno card receives it.
-
At the start of each round, each player chooses one of his cat cards to play face down. Once each player has played a card face down, the player with the Bruno card can play it on any of the five face up room piles, closing that pile for the round.
The word "Pounce" is then said at loud by the dealer, and each player flips over her cat card she chose to play. Each player then tries to slap the room pile for the card he played. The only exception to this is if a player played the cat card for the pile that was closed, she should not slap that pile or she will face a penalty. The first player to slap each pile receives a room card from that pile.
There are two ways penalties can result in Pounce. One is if a player slaps the pile that was closed by the Bruno card. The other is slapping a stack other than the room stack of the cat card the player played. Each of these penalties results in the player receiving no room card that round and having to lose one of his previously won room cards. - Players must keep their room cards they win face up in front of them during the Pounce game. The goal of Pounce is to be the first player to either have four of the same room card, or a combination of one room card for four of the different rooms. To make the game longer, instead of playing just one round you can play the first player to three victories wins the game.
