Seasickness Treatment

Although going on a cruise or a fishing trip can be a fun experience, there definitely is a possibility that you may get sick. Seasickness is caused by your body being exposed to an environment in which your movement varies from what you expect it to be. Seasickness can make you dizzy, tired and light-headed.

  1. Overcoming Seasickness

    • If you are on a boat and begin to start to feel sick, think about how much water you have drunk. If you are even slightly dehydrated, your body is less efficient at being able to overcome the stress a boat ride presents. Start drinking water immediately. Take consistent, small sips. Drinking too much water at once could make you sicker.

      Stay out in the fresh air. If you are on a cruise, sit on the deck or stand by the railing and find a spot in the distance that you can focus on. Stay out of the cabin to allow the wind to blow on your face and take in the fresh air.

      Avoid others who are also seasick. Seasickness tends to have a domino effect. If you are feeling sick, stay away from others to make sure that you do not hear or see them throw up. Seeing this would increase the likelihood that you might throw up as well.

      Do not lie down. Even though you may want to lie down, it is much easier to get over seasickness by standing. Fight the urge to be on your back and instead try to focus on remaining semi-active. This can help your body adjust to the seasickness.

    Avoiding Seasickness

    • Rest well the night before you go out onto the sea. A person who is tired is more apt to become seasick. It is a good idea to prepare everything you need for the trip early in the day to make sure you do not need to stay up late preparing.

      Stay away from greasy or acidic foods. If the foods in your stomach are heavy, you are more susceptible to becoming sick on a boat or ship. Heavy foods should be avoided for several hours before a boat trip. When eating breakfast, avoid foods like waffles, pancakes, eggs, sausage and bacon. It is better to choose non-acidic foods such as grapes, bananas and apples.

      It is important to eat something before a trip, but overeating is never a good idea. While you should avoid foods that are greasy, this does not mean that you must skip eating altogether. A stomach that is empty can be just as prone to seasickness as a stomach that is full of heavy food. Remember to eat early in the morning if you are going on a morning boat trip to make sure your stomach has enough time to start processing the food.

      There are some medications that can be helpful in avoiding seasickness. Some people take medications like Dramamine or Bonine an hour or two before setting sail. These medicines could make you drowsy. Medicines that include the ingredient Cyclizine can also be taken. They may be less likely to make you drowsy.
