Weddings come in all flavors, and there is no wrong or right decision when it comes to selecting your personal style. An under-the-sea wedding cake could take its cues from the elegant yet subdued colors of sand and sea shells, perhaps accented with pearls, or could be covered with the bright colors of coral and tropical fish. The style could further range from highly realistic to graphic and cartoon-like. The world is your oyster, so choose whatever style works for you.
Think through your ideas before you meet with your wedding cake designer. Cut out photos from magazines, but don't limit yourself to only the bridal magazines; under-the-sea inspiration can be found in many travel magazines as well, or in specialized publications dedicated to scuba diving, the ocean, beaches or any other sea-related topic. The more you can verbally or visually express your likes and dislikes, the better your cake designer can make your vision come to life. - Wedding cakes aren't just about the exterior; the cake itself needs to be able to hold its own against its elaborate decorations. Consider both the color and the taste; you want the sliced cake to look fabulous while on the plate, as well as to taste delicious when your guests take their first bites. The flavor itself is another way to further the under-the-sea theme. While obviously no one is going to serve their guests a fish-flavored cake, you could take inspiration from the islands of Hawaii, for example, and incorporate tropical fruits or macadamia nuts.

The possibilities are nearly endless when thinking about an under-the-sea wedding cake. Seashells are a popular motif, but other maritime elements include fish, seaweed, bubbles, coral, dolphins, anchors, jellyfish or starfish. Don't be afraid to be creative.
The cake topper can make a statement. Flowers are a popular choice, but there are many traditional wedding couple toppers available to complement an under-the-sea theme, such as a mermaid and merman wedding couple, a pair of scuba divers, or even a traditional wedding couple standing nestled in an open shell. Ask for ideas at your local bridal supply store or search online for unique sea-themed cake topper options. Your cake designer could also sculpt edible seashells or sea creatures out of sugar or chocolate.
