Pep up a son or daughter's room with some contemporary verve. Beyond cheerfully painted walls, you can select modern design furniture to complement his or her tastes. Think sheets and big pillows, functional art and comfortable yet stylish seating.

    A bedding makeover

  1. Try Ikea for bubble designs for twin bed duvet covers and sheets. Brightly colored, oversized pillows, even with sequins, enhance a sense of Scandinavian simplicity and sleekness. With their fluff, duvets also add a sense of texture to a room.
  2. Beanbags and bulletin boards

  3. For some 1970s comfort for your elementary school-age child, look into Fatboy beanbag designs. Comfortable, oversized shapes fit a child's body and are just right for curling up to read a favorite story. A flash of the retro look adds pizazz to a plain wall via magnetic flower bulletin boards, in pink or orange. Just attach favorite photos or prize ribbons to the petals with small magnets.
  4. Loft, anyone?

  5. As your child heads for the teenage years, consider a loft bed for an economical take on space as well as contemporary chic. A desk fits neatly below. These can be purchased in any shade from white to cappuccino and from metal to wood. Choose a style that provides shelf space for books and supplies.
