A wide expanse of grass -- whether in your own back yard or a public park -- makes an inviting place to play an outdoor game. While some lawn games, such as crochet, require specialized equipment, you can set up other games using items you already have, such as making a Frisbee golf course with Hula hoops. Many lawn games have simple rules, so even young children can play along.

    Horseshoes

  1. The game of horseshoes is like an advanced ring toss. Two pits are set up about 40 feet apart. Large steel stakes are in the center of the pits and stick about a foot and a half out of the ground. Players then toss two horseshoes each to the furthest pit, trying to get closest to the stake for points. A horseshoe fully around the stake is known as a ringer and is worth 3 points rather than the 1 point for the closest horseshoe thrown. A winner is declared when a player or team reaches 15 points first.
  2. Ring Toss

  3. Younger lawn players can enjoy a ring toss. Small plastic stakes are stuck into the ground and the objective is to get the ring to land around the stake. The game can be performed at varying distances and the light plastic rings are easier for children to handle rather than heavy horseshoes.
  4. Lawn Darts

  5. Lawn Darts are a high flying way to utilize a big yard. Small hoops are placed around a far side of the yard and players attempt to throw heavy-weighted darts into the hoops. Points are scored for every successful dart, with more points awarded to smaller hoops.
  6. Frisbee Golf

  7. An easy way to occupy large groups of players is by hosting a game of Frisbee golf. The golf "holes" are set-up as large hula hoops laid flat on the grass. Players start each hole at a designated spot and must throw their Frisbee towards the hula hoop. Their score is however many throws it takes for the Frisbee to land inside the hula hoop. Whoever has the lowest amount of throws during a game is declared the winner.
  8. Bocce

  9. Also known as lawn bowling, bocce is a game of accuracy and strategy. Players are assigned a colored set of bocce balls and they attempt to get their ball closest to the little white playing ball. They can use their balls to knock out opponent balls if they need to. Points are scored each round for the number of balls that lie closest, and teams play up to 15 or 21.
