- People who have oily hair should shampoo their hair daily. When shampooing your hair, choose a clear shampoo. The clearer the shampoo, the less chemicals in it that can cause your hair to become oily. Choose a shampoo with a pH level higher than 6.7. Only condition your hair when it begins to feel dried out. Use a dime-size to nickle-size amount of conditioner. Spread conditioner along the length of the hair to the tips. Avoid putting conditioner on the roots of the hair, because this can cause the hair to become oily. Rinse the conditioner thoroughly.
- Household products such as cider vinegar and lemon juice can help oily hair by decreasing the oil. Combine 2 tbsp. cider vinegar with 1 cup water, or the juice from a fresh lemon with 1 cup water, straining the seeds. After shampooing, rinse the mixture through your hair. Let it set for a few seconds, and rinse with warm water. Lemon juice will control the buildup of shampoos that form on the scalp.
- Any form of alcohol you have in your home can control oil. Alcohol has a drying effect on the hair and scalp, controlling the production of oil that forms on the scalp. Mix a shot glass of liquor, such as tequila, with 2 cups water. After shampooing, rinse through your hair thoroughly. Do not leave the mixture in; rinse with warm water. Beer is another alcoholic beverage that can be used on oily hair. After shampooing, open a can of beer. Pour the beer through the hair, using half a can. Let it set for a few seconds and then rinse. Beer cleans down to the scalp, leaving a healthy shine to your hair.
