Natural Remedies

Lifestyle changes can assist with treatment of eczema. Using a daily moisturizer can help prevent and treat eczema. Thicker lotions and ones that contain skin softeners like aloe and shea butter are even better. Sometimes bathing, showering and drying frequently can cause eczema. If possible, take a maximum of one shower or bath per day. Also, do not spend a lot of time in a bath or shower or use hot water. Also, some foods are known to cause eczema outbreaks. Dairy products like butter, cheese and yogurt and highly acidic foods like berries, oranges, eggs and sodas are a few examples.
Medical Remedies

Doctors can prescribe treatments in severe cases of eczema. Cortisone ointments and creams can alleviate the irritation when used moderately. If used too often, they can lead to even more skin irritation than before. Antihistamines, both prescribed and over the counter, can relieve itchiness. If you buy an OTC antihistamine, be sure it is one that has been recommended by your doctor.
Prevention

Eczema is an incurable condition but there are plenty of remedies available and preventative measures. Certain allergens like dust mites, pollen and pet dander may aggravate eczema. Cold, dry air is also another condition that can cause a flare up. Stay inside at a comfortable, mild temperature if you live in cool, dry climate. An air purifier can also help reduce skin irritation. Obviously, there is not much you can do if you live in place where pollen and allergens are rampant, but an air purifier can help when you are at home.
