Hairstyles for today's teens are neither mediocre nor boring. A teenager has a plethora of styles available to him. Before deciding, the teen should consult with his stylist to ensure that the style he selects is realistic and practical, and that it is one he will be able to maintain on his own, once he leaves the salon. After the hair is styled in a mode that suits the teen's preference, facial shape, features and hair texture, his stylist might suggest conditioners and hair products to enhance the new look.

    Styles to Avoid

  1. Short layers brushed to the side look smart and stylish on most face shapes

Finding a hairstyle to frame a narrow face is not as difficult as you might think. Before you decide how to have your hair styled, consider first what you do not want. If your face is long and thin, stay away from long, straight hairstyles that tend to elongate your face even more. Avoid haircuts that emphasize the top of your head, including top layers that are combed up and back, and layers that are spiked or puffy.
  2. Illusion of Fullness

  3. A surfer style uses layers to create a tousled, careless effect

A popular look for teens is a surfer look, or one that employs layers in different lengths for a tousled or messy effect. This style works nicely for guys with straight or naturally wavy hair, and gives the face an illusion of width. The hair is cut with scissors or a razor into short layers or slightly longer layers that frame a narrow or thin face and lend a bit of fullness to the sides. The ends of some of the layers can be fringed, where needed, to soften prominent or angular facial features.
  4. Curly or Coarse Hair

  5. Hair gone wild

If your hair is naturally curly and your face is thin, your best hairstyle option might be one that allows the hair to express itself naturally, even if the look is slightly disheveled or wild.

Teens with curly, coarse hair might consider letting their hair grow to a medium length that falls between the jaw and shoulder. The free-flowing curls make the face appear wider and fuller. If the hair's lack of shine and pliability make this style impractical, consider asking the stylist for a hair treatment plan that may help combat these obstacles.
  6. Considerations

Hair does not always need to be cut to develop a style that goes well with a narrow or thin face. Besides allowing curly hair to trail naturally down the sides of the face, other styles that add width and interest to a narrow face include Mohawks, twists, braids, cornrows and dreadlocks. In addition, narrow or thin faces look well with asymmetrical hairstyles, in which the hair on the left and right sides of the head are cut at different lengths and may also differ slightly in style.
