No one enjoys moving. It is one of those hassles that everyone tries to avoid. However, sometimes it must be done. Oftentimes, along with moving, comes the dreaded chore of storing your personal belongings. Moving and storage together is one ugly mix, but it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, there are ways to make moving and storage bearable, if not tolerable.

    Get Organized

  1. Develop a plan of action long before your moving date. Stick with that date. Include the number and types of boxes you think you will be needing. Make sure you have enough bubble wrap, newspaper or other wrapping you will need for your breakables. Enlist others to help you, including extras for those who back out of helping you or have something come up and are unable to assist you move. Make a list of the items you will be using in your new home and the items to be stored to avoid confusion on moving day.
  2. Small Boxes

  3. Use small boxes. Small boxes are easier to carry and stack when you are storing them. Packing small boxes is also easier. Label all the sides and the top of the box so you will know what is inside. Use a permanent marker in a bold color. Add what room the box belongs in as well or mark them "To Store" if they will not be used in your new home.
  4. Wrap It Up

  5. Wrap up all breakables. Newspapers, bubble wrap and other packing materials work well. Wrap your dishes and other breakable kitchen items in kitchen towels to save space as well as money spent on packing materials. Wrap breakable items in bath towels as well. Place breakable items from your bedroom between pillows and bed linens.
  6. Big Stuff Last

  7. Move the biggest, heaviest and hardest to maneuver items last. This will allow you more room to get them out of your home. Moving the larger and heavier items last will also decrease the chances of breaking small items should something large be dropped. Do not to place small items between larger items in a moving van/trailer because as the vehicle moves, the large items will shift, possibly crushing the smaller items. This will also help you place them when it comes time to store your larger items. It is best that they be placed in the back of the storage unit. Stack your smaller items on top of the larger items.
  8. Break It Up

  9. Take frequent breaks. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Eat several, small snack-like meals. Follow all safety precautions when lifting heaving items, such as lifting with your legs and not your back. Take care of yourself and do not push yourself too hard. Avoid moving in the heat of the day.
