Natural Makeup Doesn't Cover Beauty
Natural Makeup Doesn't Cover Beauty

Natural-looking makeup does not mean a "no makeup" look. Natural makeup should match your skin tone and be light in coverage. When people see you, they should think, "What a beautiful face," not "Look at her makeup!" Whatever brand or type of makeup you use, it should always be applied to clean skin and removed before bed.

From Quick Guide: Introduction to Natural Makeup

    Choosing the Right Makeup

  1. Using the right makeup and tools will help give your skin a natural look. Avoid stick or pancake foundations or foundations that act as a concealer and foundation; these tend to look heavier. Choose light foundations, such as liquid, mousse, tinted moisturizers or mineral foundations.

Using the wrong color for your skin can make you look older or sick. If you have blue undertones, you have cool skin. Look for foundation with a slight pinkish hue. Rose, raspberry and similar pink blush and lipsticks work for your complexion. Warm skin has olive or yellow undertones. Look for makeup with a slight golden hue. Peach, soft corals, honey-colored blush and lipsticks work for you.

Eyeshadow needs to look natural---oyster, salmon, almond, taupe and soft brown work for most skin colors. Eyeliner and mascara should match the color of your lashes. Women with fair lashes should use a soft brown or taupe. Use a translucent powder for setting the makeup.

If you have dark circles or skin problems you wish to conceal, choose a concealer that is one or two shades lighter than your foundation. Avoid using "luminescent" under-eye concealer; they will give you an opossum look in bright lights.
  2. Makeup Application

  3. Apply the concealer under your eyes or on imperfections. Blend the edges gently with a sponge or your little finger. Apply the foundation to your face, using a sponge or powder. Feather a small amount under your chin, but do not put any on your neck. Apply the blush by looking directly in the mirror and smiling. Find the center or "apple" of your cheek. From that point, sweep a small amount of blush towards your ear, curving lightly around your eye, forming a sideways "J." Set the makeup with a dusting of translucent powder.

Apply eyeshadow in thirds to the eyelid. Apply the lightest color to the inner corner of the eyelid, a medium color to the center and a hint of the darkest color on the outer corner of the eye, forming a sideways "V" from the lashes to the bottom of the brow bone. Do not go past the edge of your eyebrow. Blend the eyeshadows so there is no definite line between the colors. Apply liner close to the lashes and smudge with a cotton swab.

Apply eyebrow makeup in small, hair-like strokes, following the natural line of the brow. Finish the eyes with one or two light coats of mascara.

Apply a light coat of lipstick or outline your lips with a lip liner and use lip balm. Blot by pressing a tissue to your lips.
