- Color over the permanent marker heavily with a dry-erase marker. The solvent in the dry erase marker will dissolve the ink from the permanent marker. Erase using a dry-erase board eraser, and follow up with a standard glass cleaner. Rinse by wiping with a clean, damp rag. This is one of the safest and most convenient solutions for cleaning permanent marker on a whiteboard.
- Alcohol is an effective solvent for permanent ink. Apply rubbing alcohol with cotton balls. For the best results, allow the alcohol to set on the board. Try spraying the mark liberally with aerosol hairspray and allowing it to remain on the board for a few minutes before wiping away. Nail polish remover, WD-40 or Goo Gone may also be effective for whiteboard cleanup. Test chemical cleaners in a corner before trying them on your whiteboard. Follow up with a multi-surface spray cleaner and rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
- Toothpaste often works to clean permanent marker off of dry-erase boards. Choose a paste (not gel), and apply liberally. Allow the toothpaste to sit on your whiteboard for a few minutes, then wipe it away. Toothpaste has gentle abrasive qualities that can help remove permanent marker. You can also try Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser, Bon Ami scouring powder or Soft Scrub on your dry-erase board. Keep in mind that abrasive cleaners may damage the surface of your whiteboard, so try these only if the other options don't work.
