- Consider season tickets to passes to events they enjoy. Grandparents on limited budgets may not be able to afford many cultural events. Whether you choose sports events, theater tickets or simply passes to the movies, grandparents are sure to appreciate your thoughtfulness.
- Give supplies or gift certificates for their favorite hobbies. Sewing or craft supplies may not be in the budget, so they will be appreciated by anyone who sews or does crafts. Fishing equipment or a gift certificate to purchase it provides the opportunity for Grandpa to add to his collection of lures and lines.
- Give gifts for the grandparents' pets. Pet toys, food and vet visits can be expensive. You can help out by giving a nice selection of pet toys, grooming aids, bags of food and certificates to the vet. If you are unsure of pet needs, a certificate to a pet shop is a gift that is sure to be used.
- Create a memory jar for a fun gift that will bring a smile. Have children, grandchildren and other relatives type or write short memories of times spent with the grandparents on slips of colored paper. Fold and place them in a large mason jar. Decorate the outside of the jar, and label it with a cute phrase like "Life's Little Memories" or simply "I Remember..."
- Make a slide show of favorite family photos, and burn it onto a CD for grandparents to view on a computer or DVD player. (Check whether their DVD player will run CDs.) Add their favorite music, and present it to them as a special gift they can view over and over. The CD doesn't require displaying and is available anytime.
- Make arrangements for a special vacation or night away from home. Hotel reservations, travel plans and a gift card for spending during the trip make taking a vacation easy. Make sure the reservations can be changed to a different date if necessary.
