If you are hypoglycemic, then your glucose (blood sugar) levels are lower than normal. Unless you take precautions to keep your glucose levels stable, you can feel unrelenting hunger, break out into a cold sweat with a rapid heartbeat and even faint. One way to prevent this is to eat five or six small meals throughout day instead of the traditional three, as this will maintain glucose levels more evenly. Read on for some more tips if you have been recently diagnosed with low blood sugar.

    The Right Kind of Carbs

  1. Sources of complex carbs

Avoid simple carbohydrates and foods laden with sugars, corn syrup, honey and other sweeteners, which your body digests quickly, rapidly releasing glucose into the bloodstream and then sending you on a sugar crash, which lowers your blood sugar. Instead go for complex carbohydrates, which take longer to digest, so your glucose levels don't go up and down to such extremes. Look for whole grains such as brown rice and whole wheat bread.
  2. Protein

  3. You can find protein in nonanimal sources.

With each meal, you should also have a protein, which takes the body even longer to break down and release into the bloodstream than complex carbs. It also provides amino acids and important minerals that your body needs to function properly. Choose from hormone-free lean meats, beans, nuts and seeds. Avoid red meat and animal sources that are high in saturated fat as this kind of fat has been linked to heart disease, obesity and a whole host of health problems.
  4. Go for the Fiber, Not the Fat

  5. Sources of fiber
    Sources of fiber
In addition to lean meat, avoid full-fat dairy sources such as milk and cheese. As for other sources of fats, eggs and oils should be consumed in moderation. Replace the fat with fiber, which cannot be digested by the system itself. Foods high in fiber are very slowly digested by the body, so that your blood sugar levels remain steady. It also slows down how quickly your body absorbs sugar.
