Screen tips are small text boxes or sometimes images that pop up when a computer mouse points to a particular word or phrase in a document or on a web page. Screen tips typically provide more information regarding the item to which it is linked. Learn how to make your own screen tips in a Microsoft Word document.

    Create a Bookmark

  1. Bookmark Dialog

The first step to create a screen tip in Word involves using a feature called a bookmark. Much like the bookmarks used in web browsers that will take you back to your favorite sites, the bookmark in the Word document links the screen tip back to the word, phrase, picture or other object in the document.

To create a bookmark, select the word, phrase or object, such as a picture or a table, to which you want to link a screen tip by placing the mouse pointer to the left of it, clicking and holding the mouse button while dragging the pointer across the word or object. Once it is selected, go to the "Insert" tab of the ribbon in Word 2007 and click "Bookmark" in the "Links" group. In Word 2003 or earlier, select "Bookmark" from the "Insert" menu.

When the "Bookmark" dialog box opens, type a name that you will be able to remember in the "Bookmark Name" field. The bookmark name has to be one word. For instance, if you are adding just one screen tip to the Word document, you could name it "Screentip" if you choose. However, if you want to make several screen tips in the document, each one will require a unique bookmark name.

After entering a name for the bookmark, click the "Add" button.

Once the bookmark has been added, the text or object should still be highlighted showing that it is still selected. If not, use the mouse to select it again. Go to the "Insert" tab of the ribbon in Word 2007 and select "Hyperlink." In Word 2003 or earlier, go to the "Insert" menu and select "Hyperlink," or click the "Hyperlink" button on the toolbar. Alternatively, you can press the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+K" in any version of Word. The "Insert Hyperlink" dialog box will open.

Click the "Bookmark" button to open the "Select an Existing Place in the Document" dialog box. Click on the bookmark name and then click "OK." Next, click the "ScreenTip" button at the top right of the box and type the screen tip you want to use into the "ScreenTip Text" field. Click "OK" to save the screen tip and "OK" again to close the "Insert Hyperlink" dialog box.

Save the changes to the Word document. The next time anyone places the mouse over the linked word or object, your custom screen tip will appear.
