The pencil skirt has a classic silhouette that is flattering for every figure. It hugs the hips and enhances a woman's curves. The pencil skirt is a must-have item for any woman's closet; it is professional enough for the office, can be dressed down for everyday wear or dressed up for a party. However, like all fashion staples, the pencil skirt can be unappealing if worn in the wrong outfit.

  1. Blouses and Tops

    • For the office, choose blouses that fit a professional environment. Long-sleeved, slim-fitting, collared shirts are perfect for the office and look flattering when tucked into a pencil skirt. There are various options with long-sleeved collared shirts. If your pencil skirt is black, you can choose from various colors or prints.
For a more relaxed look, choose a collarless blouse and do not tuck it in. Blouses to consider are those with interesting silhouettes such as cowl-necks or boat necks. You can choose a tight-fitting top or a looser top. A tight-fitting top will help accentuate your curves, while a looser top gives a relaxed look. If you choose a looser top, bring the look together by wearing a skinny belt to define your waist.

    Shoes

    • For an office or professional setting, pair your pencil skirt with sensible shoes. Heels are advisable for an office environment. Wear heels in neutrals, such as black or beige. For a party or date outfit, there are various options. Wear stilettos or sandal heels for a sexy look. Low-cut ankle booties can add a chic vibe to your outfit. For a more casual look, consider ballerina flats. If you prefer not to wear heels, consider pointy-toed flats, which elongate your legs without heels.

    Belts

    • Add a belt to your outfit to help define your waist. Choose a skinny belt rather than a wide belt because the skinny belt flatters the precise lines of the pencil skirt's silhouette. Depending on the occasion, use the belt to add subtle color to your outfit. Skinny belts come in bright colors such as red or teal, and in neutrals such as brown or black. If you are dressing for a demure office look, a neutral belt may be the best option. However, if you work in a creative environment or are planning a party outfit, adding a brightly colored belt can enhance your outfit.
Wear your belt strategically to emphasize your qualities. Wearing the belt higher can give the illusion of longer legs. Whereas, if you wear your belt lower, it will make your legs seem shorter.
