Organization Ideas for Young Boys' Rooms

If you have young boys, chances are their rooms are a perpetual disaster area. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. Most boys are very active, but they are capable of keeping their rooms organized with a little help. Having the right furniture and containers to store your boys' belongings can help.

De-cluttering and Closet Organization

To properly organize your boys' room, you must keep it clear of clutter. Regularly enlist your child's help in going through old toys to see what he's willing to get rid of. Give the toys to charity or hand them down to a younger child. Go through his closet to find clothes that are very worn or that are too small. Place shirts and pants separately in the closet. Also separate school clothes from play clothes, especially if your child must wear a uniform to school. Find another section in the closet for pajamas and costumes for holidays such as Halloween.

Using Furniture and Containers to Organize

If you have two boys sharing a room, get a bunk bed to save space. Buy multi-purpose furniture such as a bed with a built-in dresser, book shelf, desk or drawers to make the best use of the space in the room. Your child will also need at least one and preferably two or more boxes for his toys. Get large toy boxes to hold bulky toys that consist entirely of one piece. Wooden and rattan toy boxes are best, but large plastic bins with lids work in a pinch. When buying plastic bins, get the ones with lids that stack easily. Also get smaller toy boxes or a rack with several bins to hold small toys and toys with many small parts. Use the shelf at the top of his closet to store square and rectangular items, especially items such as board games that are still inside their original box.

You can also purchase containers that are specifically designed to store toys such as toy cars, trains and Legos. Take advantage of the containers the toys were in when you purchased them if they're made from a sturdy material such as plastic. If your child has a television in his room, get a small entertainment center with space to store tapes and DVDs. Also get a storage unit for CDs if he listens to music in his room. If he has a lot of CDs, get a tall, sturdy plastic rack to store them. However, if he only has a few, a small soft-sided CD storage case will probably be sufficient.

Keeping the Boys' Room Organized

Get your child to help you clean his room whenever possible. If the child is over seven years old, have him clean the room himself as much as possible. Instruct the child on how to properly organize his belongings. Don't allow him to play with a new toy until he has put away the one he was playing with previously.
