In order to make this occasion more comfortable, you'll need to pack some basic items. Many women's feet become cold during childbirth, so a pair of socks will be welcome. Also add a comfortable nightgown, robe and slippers just in case you don't care to wear the open-back gowns the hospital provides. A good support bra should also be brought for wearing after the birth.
Your new baby will need an outfit to have her picture taken in and to go home in. Also, bring a receiving blanket to wrap the baby in when leaving the hospital. Even if it's hot outside, the baby could get a chill. Most hospitals give you a gift in the form of a diaper bag, bottles, diapers, lotion, wipes and some cans of formula. But it's alright to bring some of these items with you, just in case they are needed. -
During the birth of your child, appearances will probably be the last thing on your mind. However, afterward you may want to clean up a little. Packing a hair brush, deodorant, makeup and a toothbrush will help make you feel more like yourself. Most hospitals will provide deodorant, toothbrushes, shampoo, lotion, soap and a comb, so don't worry if you find you've forgotten some personal hygiene items.
If you and your partner plan on taking pictures or making a video of the birth, then a camera needs to be packed. Also bring a cell phone and your address book so loved ones can be told of the new arrival. You may be bored, at times, during your stay in the hospital, so bring a book with you to pass the time. - You or your partner will have to get you admitted to the hospital, so make sure your insurance or medical card is packed. Any other personal documents you might need should be in the overnight bag, too, such as your Social Security card.
