Polar fleece is warm, easy to care for and practical for a variety of garments, especially outerwear. Polar fleece hats can easily be made to fit anyone from an infant to an adult with simple pattern modifications. Make hats for yourself, to sell at craft fairs, donate to charity or as gifts for friends and family.

    Easy Fleece Hat

  1. The easiest fleece hat requires a panel of fleece one-half-inch longer than the circumference of the wearer's head, which is usually from 10 to 13 inches, depending upon the wearer. Sew the ends together with a quarter-inch seam allowance. Sew across the top of the hat with a quarter-inch seam. Fold up the brim of the hat approximately three inches, turn under one-quarter inch and stitch. Trim seams if needed. Add pompoms or other details to the corners of the hat if desired. This simple hat can be made in any size and works especially well for children. Piece fabrics together in horizontal or vertical stripes to add interest and color.
  2. Variations

  3. Using the same tube construction as the hat above, experiment. Add a few additional inches of length and fringe the top of the hat, tying around the base of the fringe to secure it. Use a hat you already have to draw a curve and create your own pattern. This can be as simple as a half-oval or as complex as a rounded wedge, used to construct a beanie-style hat. Reshape a simple hat pattern to include pointed jester like tips or a long stocking cap shape. Consider adding earflaps and ties for additional warmth. Experiment with contrasting brims or other details to add style and personality to your hats.
  4. Considerations

  5. Choose good, non-pilling polar fleece. Use heavyweight fleece for cold weather. Opt for lightweight micro-fleece for more elaborate hats or hats that will be worn indoors.

Make playful hats with bright colors and pompoms for young children or adults looking for something whimsical. Use hat patterns designed for knit fabrics. Earflaps and chin straps work well for children's hats and may be practical for some adult hats as well.
