Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to create professional presentations for business meetings or training classes. You can also use it to make slide shows with text and your favorite pictures. Once you have learned some basics to help you prepare your first PowerPoint presentation, you can try out other tools and features to expand your slide show-making skills.

    Getting Started

  1. Title slide

To begin, open PowerPoint and click "New" from the "Office Button" in PowerPoint 2007, or from the "File" menu in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier. Click "Installed Templates" in PowerPoint 2007, or "On My Computer" from the right task pane in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier, and select a template by clicking on it and then clicking "Create" or "OK."

A new PowerPoint presentation will open displaying the title slide. Click inside the text box that says, "Click to Add Title." Enter the title for the PowerPoint presentation over the sample text. Click inside the subtitle placeholder and add a subtitle as well, or you can delete this text box by clicking the border and pressing the "Delete" key.
  2. Add Slides

  3. Add content to a PowerPoint slide

Once you have created the title slide, add the next slide of your presentation by right-clicking the title slide and selecting "New Slide," or by clicking "New Slide" on the "Home" tab of the ribbon in PowerPoint 2007, or on the "Formatting" toolbar in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier.

The default for new slides has a title at the top of the slide and a large text box beneath that. You can simply enter the title and text you want on the slide. However, you do not have to settle for this format. In PowerPoint 2007, click the drop-down arrow under "New Slide" on the "Home" tab of the ribbon to select a different layout for the current slide. In PowerPoint 2003 or earlier, select a slide layout from the task pane on the right. Some of the slide layouts will include icons that make it easy to insert content such as charts and tables, graphics, or audio and video clips. Click on the icon for the type of content you want to add, select the desired item and click "Insert." Make slides for the entire presentation in the same manner.
  4. Animation

If you would like your slides to swirl, dissolve or even bounce onto the screen, PowerPoint's animation tool makes it possible. In PowerPoint 2007, click the Slides tab in the left pane of the window and click on a slide. Go to the "Animations" tab and click an effect in the "Transition to This Slide" section. Click the drop-down arrow beside "Transition Speed" to make the slide animation slower or faster, and then click "Apply to All."

In PowerPoint 2003 or earlier, go to the "Slide Show Menu" and select "Animation Schemes." Select the type of animation you want to use from the left task pane. PowerPoint will display a preview of the animation effect. Click "Apply to All Slides."

Save the PowerPoint presentation when you are finished. To present the slide show, go to the "Slide Show" tab in PowerPoint 2007 and click "From Beginning," or go to the "Slide Show" menu in PowerPoint 2003 or earlier and select "View Show."
