A modern teen bedroom has to accomplish a number of things. It should reflect your teen's tastes and interests as well as be a functional space to do homework, rest and socialize with friends. Although teen heartthrobs and boy bands may have covered the walls of teen bedrooms in the past, today's teen often requires a more sophisticated, modern look. Here's how to achieve it for your teen.

    High-Tech

  1. iPod and flat screen

Some teens love gadgets, and companies market new electronics to teens with bright colors and all the bells and whistles they love. Create a sleek high-tech bedroom for your teen by painting the walls a deep gray to provide a modernistic backdrop for all the gear. Hang a flat-screen television on the wall and provide black shelving beneath to hold game consoles and controllers. Set up a silver metal desk with a glass top or a black wood desk with brushed silver pulls and handles to hold your teen's laptop or desktop computer. Be sure the desk is large enough to hold iPod and phone chargers and docks. Purchase a set of iPod speakers to complete the electronics area.

Finish the look in the room with the modern color palette of blacks, grays and silvers on the bed and window dressings. Add splashes of color with red throw pillows or a bright yellow beanbag chair.
  2. Mini Living Room

  3. Bean bag chairs

Teens can be much more sophisticated than former generations were at that age, and that means entertaining friends in their own space. A seating area can be created for invited guests in nearly any sized room. First, create a clean and organized environment in the rest of the room by using light-colored bed linens and curtains.

Place a chaise lounge at the end of the bed and an occasional chair near a window for reading or chatting with friends. A couple of beanbags can serve as extra seating and can be pulled out of a closet when needed so as not to crowd the room during the rest of the time. Save floor space in the room by hanging a flat-screen television on the wall over the desk area.

If your teen has a large bedroom, include a dorm-sized refrigerator cube for soft drinks and snacks. This will make your teen's room a favorite gathering spot for all her friends.
  4. Xtreme

  5. Extreme sports

Extreme sports are popular for both teen athletes and fans. Whether it's skateboard tricks, snowboarding or extreme biking, an extreme bedroom is in order. Start with a mural or artwork that reflects your teen's extreme sports interests. You can get any number of sports murals including skateboards in action, snowboarders on a snow-covered mountain or even dirt bikes on a track. A mural is a quick way to create a theme and determine the other colors for the room. Coordinate bedding with the wall mural, and use extreme sports equipment on the wall for unique art. For example, hang graphic skateboards, snowboards or helmets on the wall or shelves to add color and visual interest to the room.
