- Before attempting to use the Remote Desktop application, you should first make sure that you can successfully communicate with the computer you want to control. The easiest way to test a computer-to-computer connection is by opening a new command prompt window and using the "ping" command to send packets of data to the remote system. If you receive a response from the remote computer, then that means both systems are ready to connect.
- If you can communicate with a remote computer using the "ping" command but still cannot control it with Remote Desktop, you need to make sure that the Remote Desktop feature is enabled on the computer. The Remote Desktop settings can be adjusted in the "My Computer" properties window. There you will find a "Remote" tab that includes an option to enable Remote Desktop. In order for remote connections to work properly, this option must be turned on.
- Even with Remote Desktop enabled and a successful test connection, you may still not be able to remotely control another computer if there is a firewall blocking the connection. To allow Remote Desktop connections through the security firewall on a PC, you need to open up the "Windows Firewall" control panel and go to the "Exceptions" tab. There you will see an option for "Remote Desktop." Checking this box will allow Remote Desktop connections through the Windows firewall.
