Animate Slides
Animate Slides

One of the most impressive features of Microsoft PowerPoint is the ability to animate an entire presentation. However, many new PowerPoint users might not realize that animation can be applied to individual slides, allowing the user to switch up animation types from slide to slide, and even content on a slide can be animated. Learning how to use animation can make any PowerPoint presentation more interesting.

    Animation Schemes

PowerPoint offers several built-in animation schemes that can be applied to an entire presentation or just the slides you select. By using an animation scheme, the PowerPoint slides will each appear with the same type of animation, giving the presentation a consistent, polished and professional look.

To apply an animation scheme to selected slides in a PowerPoint presentation, open or create the slide show first. In PowerPoint 2003 or earlier, go to the "Slide Show" menu and click on "Animation Schemes." A list of available schemes will open in the "Slide Design" pane on the right. Click on the name of an animation scheme and PowerPoint will animate the current slide in the main window as a preview. Once you have selected the scheme you wish to use, hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on each slide you wish to animate in the "Slides" pane on the left, and then click on the animation scheme to apply. If you want to apply the animation scheme to the entire slide show, click the "Apply to All Slides" button instead.

If you are using PowerPoint 2007, go to the "Animations" tab of the ribbon. Preview an animation scheme by selecting it and clicking "Preview" on the right side of the ribbon. Once you have selected the scheme you wish to use, hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on each slide you wish to animate, and then click on the animation scheme to apply. If you want to apply the animation scheme to the entire slide show, click "Apply to All" on the right side of the "Animations" tab of the ribbon.

Another way to use animation in a PowerPoint presentation is to animate graphics, tables, text or other content on a slide. Select the content you want to add animation to by clicking the border of the picture or other item.

In PowerPoint 2003, go to the "Slide Show" menu and select "Custom Animation." Click the "Add Effect" drop-down arrow. In PowerPoint 2007, go to the "Animations" tab of the ribbon and select "Custom Animations."

Point to "Entrance" and select an animation type if you want the object to appear on the slide after the slide is displayed. Selecting an "Emphasis" animation type will animate an object already present when the slide appears. Select an "Exit" animation type if you want to use an animation to move an object off of the slide. Select a "Motion Path" animation and the object will move in the path selected from the list. You can also select "Draw Custom Path" in the "Motion Path" list and draw a line for the object to follow on the slide.

After adding animation to slides or an object on a slide, you can preview the PowerPoint presentation by selecting "View Show" from the "Slide Show" menu in PowerPoint 2003, by clicking "From Beginning" on the "Slide Show" tab of the ribbon in PowerPoint 2007, or by pressing the "F5" key on the keyboard. Be sure to save the presentation before closing it.
