The most important part of modern kitchen design is finding a design that works for you. Most modern kitchens are accented with sleek countertops, streamlined appliances and cabinetry, and minimal clutter. However, the most important thing to consider, according to Rebecca Zaveloff, a Chicago-based interior designer, is that "It doesn't matter if it's trendy or in style as long as it's what you want---if it makes you smile when you walk in the room."

    Cabinets and Storage

  1. Trends in modern kitchen cabinetry include an increase in the variety of woods and colors used. Wood veneers have become increasingly popular as well. Glass doors and open shelving are hot trends. Contemporary kitchens also feature innovative storage techniques. Lower cabinets often feature pull-out storage units with revolving shelves.
Because new cabinetry is a large expense, Alicia Garceau, a contributing writer at HGTV.com, suggests refinishing or refacing your current cabinets---if they are in decent shape. By refinishing your cabinets, you can choose a new stain or paint color and change the entire look of the room. Refacing is a process in which you choose a new veneer that is placed over the top of your current finish; it is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing new cabinets.
  2. Countertops

  3. Ceramic tile and natural stone have become the most popular choices for modern kitchen countertops. Although they create a sleek effect, consider the type of stone that you use for your countertop. Certain stones, such as limestone, are difficult to maintain; they are porous and can chip easily. Marble and granite are popular choices that are easier to maintain, and Zaveloff suggests using marble or limestone in neutral colors, such as light brown or beige.
  4. Appliances

  5. Popular features for kitchen appliances include energy-efficient equipment with various high-tech features. For a modern kitchen, choose appliances that have a sleek look, such as stainless steel, or are designed with wood panels to match with cabinetry for a streamlined effect.
Contemporary ovens feature convection settings and warming drawers, and the refrigerators run on more energy-efficient settings. Microwave ovens are built into cabinet drawers, allowing for more efficient use of space.
