- Use kitchen furniture that promotes organization and provides additional storage. Place only a few larger pieces of furniture to save space and make your kitchen appear less cluttered and more organized. Hutches, buffets and bedroom bureaus work well. Store additional towels, small appliances, extra silverware and other kitchen items in the furniture you choose for your kitchen.
- Organize your cabinets. Place knives and cooking utensils in a drawer close to your stove and oven. Put serving plates and bowls close to your stove and oven. Glasses and cups should be in cabinets that make them handy to get to from the sink and the refrigerator. Place similar foods, such as canned goods, baking goods, spice and fresh foods in the same areas.
- Use space-saving containers in cabinets and drawers. Use plastic shoe racks on the inside of your pantry door to place often-used canned foods. Plastic zipper bags can be used to store small kitchen items such as hand-held can openers, corkscrews and bottle openers. Store items such as flour, sugar, dry cereals and other bulky items in canisters, storing their original containers in the kitchen furniture. Clearly label all containers, adding the dates of when the food items were placed in them.
- Declutter your counters. Use decorative baskets and boxes to store items such as spatulas, wooden spoons and whisks to give you more workspace on your counters. Place your appliances in one convenient area of you kitchen. Use cord organizers or bread ties to keep the cords out of your way. Remove any lamps from your counters and install lighting under your cabinets to clear you counters of clutter.
