Planning
-
When you are reorganizing your garage, the most important step is planning. Begin by going through the items in your garage and determine which ones need to be stored in cabinets, off of the floor and which ones can be thrown out. Looking through all of your items will help you to choose the storage systems that you will need to properly organize the garage. An organized garage is one that is efficient to use. For example, if you need a particular tool, you should be able to have access to it easily without digging through a cabinet or storage bin. Determine which items you use most frequently and make sure they are stored for easy access.
Once you have evaluated the items in your garage, decide on the organization systems that you will use. Cabinets, hooks, shelves and even lofts can be added to the garage to make organization a breeze.
Organization Tools
-
There are many garage organization systems. Hooks are a good way to store tools and allow you to have easy access to them whenever you need them. They keep your tools out in the open where you can see the tool that you need and easily retrieve it.
Shelving systems are a good place to store small items such as small paint cans, aerosol containers, jars and other items that you use frequently. Shelves mean that items are easy to reach, but stored off of the garage floor.
Cabinets or freestanding closets are a good place to store your valuable items. Locking cabinets will help keep your items safe. Cabinets also help keep dust away from delicate items like linens or holiday decorations.
Loft storage for the garage takes advantage of the ceiling space in your garage. Use this for items that you don't use every day, such as camping gear. Store your tents, sleeping bags, lanterns and other equipment off of the floor until you need it. -
Do It Yourself Systems
-
The storage systems that you choose to use for your garage can be purchased or you can build them. Shelving systems are easy to build on the garage walls to store your small items. Buy cabinets to store your valuables or delicate items.
A loft system or ceiling storage is relatively easy to build on your own as well. Make certain that the loft space is sturdy to hold your weight and the weight of the items that you are storing. A 10-foot ceiling height in a garage gives you plenty of room to work with for your loft and still be able to move around in it for access to your stored items.
