- Stones are an easy yet striking way to decorate a koi pond. You can buy rocks at home stores or collect your own from a nearby wash or riverbed. Stones are great to use around the pond's border, as long as they are secured properly so they will not fall in, and can be as natural or as funky as you like. For a dramatic effect, paint the rocks in a variety of colors and seal them with polyurethane to insure they do not chip or fade. You can even get creative by painting small designs, words or little faces on the rocks.
- You can install a series of staked lights around the pond's perimeter or opt for submersible lights that are installed beneath the pond's surface. For a natural look, go for soft, natural lighting. Add colored bulbs for the wild look. Solar lights are a good option for ponds that are located in an area that gets enough sun to fuel them, or you can install a lighting system that keeps the wires and other hardware underground.
- Waterfalls or fountains may be the most time consuming koi pond decor, but they are also easily the most striking. You can create your own waterfall or fountain by hooking up a submersible water pump to push water over a collection of rocks or other objects you've set up into waterfall or fountain form. You can also buy pond fountain and waterfall kits that use fiberglass rocks and basins. Don't fret, the fiberglass is usually fashioned to appear natural, but you can paint it with waterproof plastic paint to add to the pond's jazziness. Keep in mind the pumps need electricity to run, so an outdoor extension cord, which you can hide beneath a border of shrubs or stones, is usually a must for such decor.
