String red crepe paper strands all around the entrance and the inside the party room. Tie a large red ribbon around the front entrance door. You can make these out of red plastic picnic tablecloths or red cardboard.
If the event is happening at night, purchase red paper bags at the party store and fill with sand. Cut out the initial of the couple's last name on the bag, fill the bags a quarter of the way with sand and light small candles in glass votives inside the bags. -
Hang red paper globes or red Chinese lanterns around the entrance and inside where the party is being held. Paper lanterns can be bought in party stores, online party supply stores and even in Chinatown supply stores located in major cities.
Consider lighting red candles and placing around the room. Red votive candles in clear votive glass vases will create drama. If you can't find red votive candles, you can use white votive candles and place them in water died with red food coloring inside a clear glass votive. Simply fill the votive holder quarter of the way with water and place one or two drops of food coloring. Swirl the water around and place the white candle in the clear glass votive holder. - Use a red paper or fabric tablecloth. White plates against the red tablecloth will add a great deal of drama to the tablescape. Add red slipcovers to the chairs or tie large red bows to the backs of the chairs. Crisp white napkins with red jeweled napkin holders will add a finishing touch to your 40th anniversary ruby themed party.
- Nasturtium is the official flower for the 40th anniversary. These flowers come in white, yellow and red. Arrange with your florist ahead of time to purchase the red variety of nasturtiums. They will look sharp in gold or white vases placed on your dining table or around the room. These flowers are even edible, so you can put them as garnish on the salad course for a splash of red.
- Fill the room with items of nostalgia from the year the couple got married. You can visit the local library to get the front page of the local newspaper printed out. Make copies of this cover and use it as a decoration or place mat. Get photos of the couple when they were first married and put them in red frames around the room.
