Making your own fabric purse is an enjoyable process that allows you free reign over the elements of style and form. You can use ready-made objects to simplify the process, or start sewing from scratch. A handmade fabric purse can be anything but ordinary with these creative ideas.

    Getting Started

  1. Fabric purse patterns can be found at your local quilt shop or sewing supply store, and samples are often on display. Local shops often carry the designs of nearby artists, which can have the added benefit of offering you designs that are unusual and hard to find. The advantage to shopping for your pattern and fabric in person is that you have the ability to compare the variety of projects, look more closely at design details, and get a clear idea of the level of difficulty of the project.

If a local fabric store isn't accessible, there are a multitude of online shops that carry beautiful fabrics and purse patterns.
  2. Fabric Purse Basics

  3. Begin with a pattern you love and let your choice in fabric and trim guide you to a custom-finished design. From practical to posh, handmade purses can be made to suit just about any personality style with just a simple change of fabric. Consider making a variety of purses to rotate through the seasons by taking advantage of the latest trends in seasonal fabrics. Just as clothing fashions come and go, quality fabrics change with the seasons. To create purses that rival those in the finest boutiques, get your hands on the latest designer fabrics from Moda or Andover Fabrics.

*Try adding unusual design elements, such as a woven place mat as the purse base, or adding pockets from an old shirt.
*Remember that a pattern is really just a guide. Experiment with different handle widths or adjust the number of pockets to create a more custom look.
  4. Embellishments and Trim

  5. Fabric is not the only variable on a handmade purse. Completely alter the face of your bag by adding pieces of trim or embellishment. Use rickrack to add a touch of whimsy and fun, or a strip of chenille for a vintage flair. Try using old buttons, buckles or beads from an old necklace to embellish borders or pockets. Consider taking handles from a worn-out retro bag or purse and use them to create character and interest on your new design.

Remember that no purse is complete without pockets, handles and closures. These items can be added purely for functionality or can be design elements on their own.

Keep an eye out for lace, tassels, fabric yo yo's or other items that can add interest and appeal to your purse design. The most important feature in making a fabric purse is that you love the finished product enough to actually use it. Experiment with style and functionality until you find the purse that is as fun to make as it is to use.
