- Paint the border one third of the way down from the ceiling to make your ceilings look higher. Place the border down lower for children's bedrooms and playrooms to add visual interest at their eye level. Use faux painting techniques such as rag painting, crinkle painting and sponge painting to add depth, dimension and texture to your wall border.
- Create a border around your walls using wallpaper. Use small patterns or designs to make your room look larger. Add splashes of color that match or coordinate with the accessories you have used in the room. Use a solid wallpaper border in a bold color close to the ceiling to draw the eye upward. This will make the ceilings look taller and the room more spacious.
- Stencil a border on your walls. Flower stencils work well in a country-style kitchen. Teddy bears, fairies, cartoon characters or other children's favorites work well in a nursery or toddler's room. Try stenciling numbers, letters and shapes for the wall border in a preschooler's bedroom. Geometric shapes work well in bedrooms and dining rooms.
- Create a border on your wall using wall art. Hang plates and saucers as a wall border in your kitchen or dining room. Add dolls, stuffed animals and other small toys to a child's bedroom as a border. This will create visual interest as well as depth and dimension to the wall. Hang framed family pictures as a border on the walls of a bedroom or family room.
- Use decoupage to create a wall border. Decoupage a recipe border in your kitchen. Use copies of antique family photographs to decoupage a border on the walls in the dining room or family room. Cut out photos of your teen's (or tween's) favorite singers, sports figures and movie stars to decoupage a border in their bedroom.
