- Warm up your dorm room with some basic textiles. A throw rug or two on the floor works wonders to cozy up the living space. When choosing a comforter for the bed, consider one that is reversible, so you can change the pattern for variety or to better match your roommate's bed. Don't forget the window. A curtain treatment can transform a boring window into something special. Also, add some throw pillows to you bed. Chances are that you and your guests will be sitting on it often.
- Dorm rooms are small on space, so storage is a must when you decorate. Consider propping your bed up on cement blocks and sliding some plastic storage bins underneath it. Stack some storage cubes in a unique pattern against the wall to make a custom bookshelf and storage unit. Invest in a closet organizer to help create space. Add a bulletin board to the wall for a place to post important papers. Be sure to purchase storage items for your desk as well.
- Finally, add unique touches to the room to make it special. A string of lights hung across the wall, or a paper lantern in each corner, add light and fun to a dorm room. A beanbag chair doesn't take up much room but adds color and seating. A beaded curtain hung on the wall behind a bed creates the look of a custom headboard. Alternately, create a privacy canopy with a wooden dowel and long piece of fabric. Simply hang the dowel from the ceiling, and drape the fabric over it so it forms an inverted letter "V" over the bed. Finally, save some money so that you and your roommate can go shopping together for some items for the room that you will both enjoy.
