Camel packs are plastic hydration bags housed in a canvas covering and fitted with tubes from which hikers, cyclists, runners and the like consume hands-free hydration. CamelBak, the first developer of the hydration units, originally marketed the products to athletes and outdoorsmen, but has since branched out to a plethora of workers and players including military troops. Caring for the packs is crucial to their proper function and long-term durability.

    Set-Up

  1. Remove the reservoir from the outer pack and fill with beverage and ice through the unit's mouth. Seal tightly. While it is not necessary to fully fill, if you do not, it is a good idea to remove excess air through the Camelbak Freedom Valve. Replace the reservoir in the pack, positioning the tubing to a comfortable location. Seal unit. Fit the carrying straps over the spine below your neck. Adjust for comfort and fit and secure into place.
  2. Use

  3. Route the tubing over the shoulder and put the bite valve into your mouth. Draw fluids through the tube. In freezing temperatures it is important to fully empty both the reservoir and the tubing. Expel excess liquid by blowing through the tube or allowing liquid to flow out via gravity. Insulated tube covers can also be purchased to prevent freezing.
  4. Cleaning

  5. CamelBak Hanger

Rinse out the reservoir, tubing and bite valve with warm water after each use. For further cleaning and deodorizing, fill the reservoir with water and 2 tsp. of baking soda. Massage the mix through the reservoir and the tubing and allow to sit overnight. Rinse thoroughly with hot water. If necessary, you can further clean the unit with specially designed brushes. The most important part of long-term maintenance is drying the unit fully between uses. Moisture breeds bacteria and mold. Dry the reservoir with a paper towel and then use the drying rack accessory which allows the hydration pack to open up to the air. Insert the drying hanger into the unit and hang to dry.
  6. Storage

  7. Separate the bite valve, tubing and reservoir. Open the fill cap to allow air to flow through the reservoir. Put the drying hanger into the unit and hang it and the tubing vertically to dry. Keep in a well-ventilated dry room. Rinse well before each use.
