Grants are what help nonprofit organizations to operate, and the professionals who write those grants can enjoy good financial rewards. Learning how to write grants is a skill that can be harnessed at home, but a professional grant writer will be certified and keep up with industry practices in order to provide the best services.

    Grant Writing Certification

  1. You can become a certified grant writer by taking a course from your community college. Sometimes private foundations will also hold training seminars for would-be grant writers, too. Classes can be half a day or stretch over a few weeks.
  2. Join the Association of Fundraising Professionals

  3. A professional organization for grant writers and other fund raising professionals, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has special member services and resources to help you maintain a professional practice and stay informed about changes in your industry.
  4. Never Pay for Government Grant Lists

  5. The U.S. government launched the website grants.gov to keep an index of all federally funded grants. The Foundation Center offers an indexing of some private foundations, as well as free online courses for learning grant writing.
