- Cleanse the skin with an unscented glycerin soap, unscented liquid castille soap or a non-soap cleanser such as Cetaphil or its identical generic product. Tone the skin with diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and rinse. Dab on tea tree oil on pimples for problem skin. Moisturize with a product labeled non-comedogenic to not clog pores or use jojoba oil, a plant wax, very sparingly.
- Once a week, steam problem skin to loosen debris and clear pimples. Cleanse the face and drape a clean washcloth rinsed in hot water. Pour 2 to 3 cups of hot water into a non-reactive stainless bowl and drape a towel around your head and face, holding your face above the rising steam. Do this for only 30 seconds to a minute for sensitive skin; a minute for problem skin and up to five minutes for dry. Moisturize immediately afterward.
- Essential oils are are extracted from plants, flowers and herbs and most have medicinal properties that help keep the skin healthy. For example, tea tree oil, which is antibacterial and good for oily and combination skin. Use sparingly or dilute with filtered or distilled water. Lavender essential oil is already found in many skincare products as it gentle enough to use with infants. It is good for calming problem skin, dry or sensitive skin. Its light fragrance is not irritating to most people. Clary sage is good for balancing the hormones and combination skin. Any essential oil can be added to the water for steaming the face. Add up to 10 drops of essential oil to the water.
