Windows Vista Media Player

Windows Media Player for Vista allows you to organize and play your audio and video files, rip and burn your favorite songs to and from CDs, and shop for new digital media. If Windows Vista Media Player is not working correctly or you are experiencing error messages, try some troubleshooting to try to fix the problem.

    Error Messages

  1. Error Message
    Error Message
When Windows Vista Media Player encounters a problem, an error message will be displayed. Some error messages will display an eight-digit code that will help you determine the cause of the problem, while others will be more of a general error message. The error message will also have a "Web Help" button. To determine a cause of the error and find possible solutions, make sure you are connected to the Internet and click the "Web Help" button. The Windows Media Player "Web Help" site will open with the error code displayed on Media Player and several specific troubleshooting steps that might resolve the error. Follow each step until the problem is resolved.

While an error message will typically be displayed when there is a problem, there are times when the Media Player does not work and only an "Error Button" or "Information Button" appears. The "Error Button" is a small, round, red button with a white "X" through it. And the "Information Button" is a small, round, blue button with a white "I" in the middle. If one of these buttons appears without an error message, click on the button, then select "Details." You will be given a list of information and troubleshooting steps, or an error message will be displayed along with the "Web Help" button. Follow the steps provided in the list or through "Web Help" until the problem is fixed.
  4. Full-Screen Mode Problem

  5. Display Settings

Windows Vista Media Player might freeze and stop responding if you use it in full-screen view. When you press the "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del" buttons to bring up the Windows "Task Manager" and the Media Player is no longer in full screen view, it will begin to work again. To fix this problem, change a display setting on the computer. Right click any blank area on your desktop and select "Personalize." Click on the "Window Color and Appearance" option. Select "Open Classic Appearance Properties for More Color Options" at the bottom of the window. The "Appearance Settings" dialog box will open. Click the "Effects" button. Clear the check box next to "Show Shadows Under Menus." Click "OK," then "Apply" to save the changes. Close the "Control Panel" and restart Windows Vista Media Player.
