    1. Get the Right Equipment

      • The most important tip for deer hunting is to camouflage your scent to not spook the deer. Buy a product such as those offered by Harmon and work so you are not caught downwind. You will not catch white-tailed deer if you are not quiet, slow and mindful to cover your scent. Make sure you have a good quality bow and you are comfortable using it. You will be climbing hills and trees, and cutting through underbrush so you will need a strong piece of equipment. Practice at a target range before you plan a deer hunting trip. Aim at the target from different angles and heights, and use a three-dimensional target to replicate situations you'll face.

      Know Your Whitetails

      • Spend time reading about white-tailed deer habits. Learn to recognize whitetail tracks and ask other hunters if they've seen any. Do the legwork of asking permission to hunt on private property and following up on locations you've spotted deer before. Walk the property until you know its secret hiding spots, water holes and places you've seen deer tracks. Bring calls of squirrels and other animals to draw the deer toward you. Memorize the animal's kill zone. Build a nice stand and maintain it. Clear away any twigs that will ruin your aim. Prepare a second stand nearby so you can move if the wind direction shifts.

      Watch your Stance

      • Check your stance to have the most effectiveness when in the field. Keep a proper stance to aim effectively. When shooting from a tree or hill down below, keep your knees and waist bent. Keep a bent knee when shooting straight uphill, and keep lots of anchor points to ensure you get a good shot.
