Vintage decor can bring a sense of history and home to a classic-styled abode. Like a snapshot of grandma's house, natural fabrics, hand-embroidered linens and formal furnishings can create a nostalgic nod to a simpler time. Easily attainable accessories make this a joy to create. Here's how to get started.

    Kitchen

  1. Vintage kitchen items

The kitchen is the heart of every home and a vintage-styled kitchen is filled with nostalgic items that bring back simpler days. Tiled countertops and flour cloth drying towels are traditional vintage kitchen looks, as are grain bags, retro aprons and floral-printed curtains.

Shop antique stores to find vintage tin bread boxes, wire egg baskets and retro cooking tools with green wood handles. Antique cookbooks will look great on a kitchen bookshelf, with small butter crocks and green canning jars serving as bookends. A natural wood table and chairs will finish your vintage look in the kitchen.
  2. Bath

Your bathroom can be another fun place to go vintage. Accessorize your vanity with retro mustache cups and shaving mugs. Search for a lovely antique razor. Use glass milk jugs to hold bath salts and hang the standard floral curtain on the window. If you are serious about your vintage style, converting to a claw foot tub is a must. Black-and-white tiled flooring or the more unusual pink or green tiling found in older homes works well with the vintage look.
  4. Living room

Wood-trimmed, upholstered furniture should be well worn and solidly built and decked out with small handkerchiefs, known as antimacassars, on the arms of the chairs and on the headrest. Embroidered and upholstered occasional chairs and round coffee or side tables help to dress the room. Doilies on tables, mantles and display shelves will bring your room into a past era.

Accessorize your living room with antique photographs, vintage toys and typical vintage knickknacks made of porcelain. Shop antique malls and thrift stores to find the things that take you back to your grandparents' house and you'll be on the right track.
  6. Bedroom

  7. Doilies

The bedroom may be the easiest room in the house to create a vintage look. Start with a heavy posted bed in a dark wood. Dress it up with a hand-tied quilt or crocheted afghan. Use embroidered pillow cases and sheet sets.

A dressing table or bureau should be dressed with doilies and hold crystal containers for hair pins and miscellaneous jewelry. Small porcelain statues of birds and flowers can also help to create the vintage mood.
