Borders can add interest to a professional document created in Microsoft Word. They are a fun way to decorate personal Word documents, too, such as letters. You can even choose to apply borders around selected paragraphs, or only to part of the Word document, such as the top and bottom of the page. Word offers tools to make creating borders easy.

    Page Borders

  1. Borders and Shading Dialog Box

If you are using Word 2003 or earlier, open the document and select "Borders and Shading" from the "Format" menu. The "Borders and Shading" dialog box will open.
To open the "Borders and Shading" dialog box in Word 2007, go to the "Page Layout" tab of the ribbon. Click the "Page Border" drop-down arrow and then click on "Borders and Shading."
Go to the "Page Border" tab of the "Borders and Shading" dialog box. Under "Setting," select "Box," "Shadow," "3-D" or "Custom." In the "Style" box, select the type of line you want to use for the page border. Select a color for the page border in the "Color" drop-down list and a line width for the page border in the "Width" drop-down menu. If you would rather have a more artistic page border, select an option from the "Art" drop-down list. Depending on the type of "Art" border you choose, you may be able to change the color or width as well. If so, the drop-down lists will be accessible.
  2. Text or Table Borders

  3. Text Border

You can add a border to selected text or a table instead of an entire page. Select the text or table using the mouse. Open the "Borders and Shading" dialog box. Go to the "Borders" tab. Select an option in the "Setting" section. Choose a line style, color and width. In the "Apply To" drop-down list, select "Paragraph" to apply one large border around the selected section, "Text" to apply borders around each line of text, or "Table" to apply the border to the selected table.
