Workplace Safety Tips
Many employees spend as much, or more, time at work than at home. For this reason, employees like to feel safe at work. An unsafe environment can result in injuries, lawsuits, low morale and high turnover. Consequently, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to implement safety rules, especially in high-risk industries such as construction.

Falls
-
The number-one cause of injury in the workplace is falls. Most falls are the result of improper lifting. Before lifting an item, the employee should consider the situation and plan her lifting strategy. When lifting, keep your back straight, bend your knees and tighten your abdominal muscles. Wear non-skid shoes designed for slippery areas and keep a balanced footing. Refrain from using hand lotion before lifting an item so you can get a proper grip on the item you are about to lift. If you can, push the item instead of pulling it.
Safety Signs/Policies
-
Employers are advised to place safety signs warning about hazardous areas and habits. These signs allow employees and visitors to be aware of possible dangers, and how to prevent them. If an employee or visitor ignores the signs and an injury occurs as a result, the employer is not at fault. Implementing safety signs and policies are two of the most effective ways of eliminating workplace injuries. Safety policies should be in writing, and a copy should be given to all employees and clients visiting the site.

Videos/Safety Meetings
-
Upon employment, employees should be made aware of the company's safety procedures. One of the best methods is through safety videos. Along with seeing the harm they can face, they will also see how they can avoid it. These videos are specifically designed to teach employees about safety and employees are generally more attentive to them than if they were told in person. Conducting weekly safety meetings can also be helpful, as they serve as reminders of the safety rules and offer employees a chance to ask safety-related questions.
