Office furnitureA business office must have a place for the computer, a place for papers, books and projects to be stored, and an area for completing work that doesn't involve the computer. A bulletin board also is important for holding phone numbers and memos.
Mimic the layout of walls by purchasing an L-shaped desk. An L-shaped desk with a large hutch on one or both sides creates storage space and acts as a make-shift wall. Use one half of the desk for the computer and your personal planner or monthly desk calendar. The other half can be used for laying out current papers and projects. If you have a large office, use a U-shaped desk instead. This desk creates three different sides and is perfect for storing mini-filing cabinets and boxes underneath. Check that a keyboard tray is attached underneath the desk; it will allow for more space on the desk.
For smaller spaces, a small shelf can hold office supplies. Hang a bulletin board or dry erase board from the side of a filing cabinet using magnets, or against the hutch of a larger desk. If this isn't possible, use a large organizing calendar and lay it flat on your desk. Attach sticky notes to the calendar and mark important appointments. -
Office suppliesUse a combination inbox and supply holder to save space when sorting papers and loose items. Tiny containers can hold paperclips, rubber bands and sticky notes. Buy drawer dividers or plastic trays to keep pencils and pens in place in your desk drawers. Store larger items on a shelf or on one half of an L- or U-shaped desk. A basket can hold staplers, a hole punch and scissors if there isn't enough room to set them out on your desk. Place the basket in an easy-to-reach spot on a shelf or in a cabinet of the desk's hutch.
