- Decide on the style of game room. What is your family into? Physical games like pool and darts; cerebral games like cards or board games; or fast-paced action like video games? Make the favorite pastime of your family the center of the game room remodel. For instance, a pool table can measure 4 feet by 8 feet and will require pool cues, balls, racks, lighting, chalk and a score counter. You may also want to decorate the walls with photographs or accessories that are related to pool such as old (or reproduction) pool hall neon signs.
- Choose the appropriate flooring. Depending upon your style of game room, you will then proceed to the type of flooring that is right for your game room. For example, video games can be high energy and, if food or drink is present, a source of accidents. Since tile flooring can feel "cold" in a video game room, you might want to choose a carpet that is either treated with a stain-repelling chemical or with a tight weave that resists stains and liquids.
- Get the right furniture for the game style and flooring. Some game rooms require a large amount of space for the game itself, while others make full use of furniture. For example, playing board or card games requires comfortable chairs, a well-kept table and some means of storing the games when they are not being used. In this case, you may opt for chairs and tables that take up a lot of space, whereas in a pool-hall-type game room, you might want bar stools or other furniture that takes up little space.
