If you've succumbed to the temptation to store things in the bedroom that don't belong there, such as the computer, the vacuum cleaner, exercise equipment, papers, magazines and dishes, move those items to where they really belong. You may have to declutter another part of your house to find space for them, but it will be well worth the effort. Bring in a trash can with a liner so that you can throw away anything that can't be salvaged. Also keep a hamper handy for dirty clothes. You don't have to tackle this job all at once. Instead, take 15 minutes to an hour each day to do a little bit of cleaning up and re-organizing.
Then go through your closet and decide what you can afford to get rid of. If you haven't worn that shirt, sweater or pair of shoes in years, chances are you won't miss it if you sell it, recycle it or give it away. Don't worry about how much the item cost you. If you're never going to use it again, you're not saving anything by keeping it. -
There are many organizers you can purchase, both online and in stores. However, before you purchase these organizers, you must figure out if you have enough space to install them. Use a tape measure to figure out the exact dimensions of the empty spaces in your bedroom and closets. Also measure the insides of the drawers in your dresser and nightstand.
Store items you use often within easy reach in a top drawer, on the floor of the closet or hanging on the center of the closet bar. Add extra shelving to the top shelf inside your closet to store items you use infrequently. Also consider adding a hanging organizer with pockets to store things like shoes, gloves and pantyhose. There are also wooden and metal organizers that utilize vertical space for storing shoes. Place hooks on the sides of the closet to hang belts, ties and scarves. Also consider getting cascading hangers to hang clothes that you wear infrequently. These are often more convenient than using boxes or bins for storing out-of-season clothing. If you share your bedroom with someone else, divide both the dresser and closet in half. Place long clothes on one side of the closet and short clothes on the other so you have room for a laundry hamper, a shoe organizer or a chest of drawers. Use a wooden chest to store woolen items such as sweaters and blankets. If you need more space to store your belongings, and you can't get rid of anything else, it might be worthwhile to purchase a larger dresser or install a wardrobe in the bedroom.
