Disc or Frisbee Golf

Frisbee golf is also know as disc golf. The game is played on a course that is designed similar to a golf course. The distances are much shorter, with standard measurements being feet instead of yards. There can be obstructions such as trees, poles and even water traps on a course. Becoming successful at Frisbee or disc golf is dependent on your ability to learn to throw with accuracy and increase your distance over time.

    1. Choosing a Disc

      • For players who are just starting out playing Frisbee golf, start with just two discs. One disc will be your driver that can go as far as 200-250 feet in on a single throw. The other disc is rated for short distance putting. As you get better, you can add a disc for midrange shots between 100 and 200 feet.

      Understanding Manufacturer's Ratings

      • Innova and Discraft rate their discs so you can know what to expect when you throw a golf disc. The first rating is for speed. This indicates the ideal speed at which the disc was rated. Throwing it slower will have it curve less, and throwing it faster will make it curve more.
The high-speed turning rating indicates which direction the disc will curve as it leaves your hand at a high speed. Positive numbers indicate the level as to which it curves to the left, and negative indicates a curvature to the right.
The slow-speed fade indicates how much the disc will curve at the end of its flight.
The glide rating indicates how likely the disc is to float and remain in the air as it slows down, therefore increasing its distance.

      Beginner's Tips

      • When first playing Frisbee golf, avoid competing for distance with experienced players. Concentrate on keeping a solid level of balance when throwing your disc and keeping it close to your chest. Extending your arm farther from your body might allow you to get more distance, but it can also reduce your accuracy.

      Basic Grip

      • When gripping a disc in Frisbee golf, place your thumb over the soft portion of the disc but as close to the edge as possible while keeping all four fingers under the disc itself. Keep a firm grip on the disc as you move your forearm and wrist. The movement of your forearm and wrist will result in the release of the disc in a natural motion. If you try to let go of it before this natural release occurs, your consistency and accuracy will suffer.

      Putting Tips

      • When trying your short throws for the basket, which is the equivalent of putting in Frisbee golf, throw the disc like you do in practice. If you are slow and deliberate lining up your putt when practicing, do the same thing when playing for real. If you take your stance and throw immediately when practicing, do that in the game as well. When attempting a putt, keep the front of the disc, known as the nose, down. This will reduce the risk of overshooting the hole by long distances by reducing the float. If you throw the disc with the nose up, it will float longer and increase the risk of overshooting the basket.
