- Keeping the beach house simple will reflect its role as a vacation getaway--and make it easy to clean. Steer clear of deep rugs or ornate decor that needs constant vacuuming and dusting and opt instead for plain wood floors and simple lines that can be easily swept or wiped clean with a damp cloth. Furniture should be sparse, durable and can even include outdoor benches or director's chairs. Colorful, machine-washable throw rugs are an ideal option to add some coziness, as are canvas or cotton furniture covers that can also be thrown in the wash.
- Many of a beach house's accents can be created by things found on the beach. Driftwood, either au natural or painted with designs, can make for striking wall hangings, centerpieces or stand alone sculptures. Larger pieces make great small table bases or bookends. Sea shells spruce up picture frames, mirrors or lampshades, or can be artfully arranged in shallow planters or bowls. Jars filled with small rocks or sand add a fine touch to any tabletop or bookshelf.
- Beach homes work extremely well if the house reflects the same open, airy and breezy feel one gets from a jaunt beside the ocean. Keep colors light, with lots of whites, light blues, taupe with teal or earthy tone accents. Scatter furniture around the edges of a room rather than clogging up the free flowing air through the center of the place. Windows can be left unadorned or outfitted with sheer, billowy panels rather than heavy drapery or blinds.
