- Inflammation, one of the most painful aspects of hemorrhoids, can be treated naturally. Ten-minute warm sitz baths after bowel movements can help reduce the pain and swelling. Also, witch hazel pads gently wiped on the hemorrhoid can help with inflammation, as can aloe vera, St. John's Wort oil and calendula applied topically. Ice packs applied for 10 minutes are another natural method to reduce swelling. Topical pastes made out of grated raw peeled potato and a few teaspoons of slippery elm powder can also be powerful anti-inflammatories for hemorrhoids.
- Various herbal treatments exist that might help reduce hemorrhoids as well. The digestive enzyme bromelain and the herb horse chestnut help stop enzymes from attacking damaged veins, which can help give hemorrhoids a chance to heal. Butcher's broom is an herb that helps make veins less porous, which also can promote healing. The herbs gingko and gotu kola improve circulation and blood flow through veins, as does bilberry.
- One of the best ways of naturally preventing and treating hemorrhoids may be through diet. Diets high in psyllium will help moves food through the system easily, plus soothes the digestive tract. Omega-3 fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatories, so eating salmon and other foods high in Omega-3s can help as well. Ginger, garlic and onions helps reduce inflammation and build strong blood vessels by breaking down fibrin. Alfalfa, dark leafy greens and blackstrap molasses are also noted as helping to reduce bleeding. Also, drinking plenty of water, at least 64 oz. per day is beneficial.
- Internal or prolapsed hemorrhoids may require further measures. Two natural suppository methods include using garlic and raw potatoes. To use garlic, simple peel one clove of garlic and insert in the anus, preferably leaving in overnight. To use a potato, peel and cut small pieces of raw potato into cone shapes. Insert into anus overnight. Both of these methods have been utilized by midwives for years with great success.
