What Is the Most Effective Toenail Fungus Cure?

Save

Toenails are vulnerable to being attacked by fungus, which can cause a deep-seated infection. As the fungus settles into the nail, it will thicken and become discolored, usually with a darkened, yellowish or brownish appearance. It will also start to crumble. Toenail fungus also can cause pain. While you can buy over-the-counter medications to treat it, they may not solve the problem. Often, the fungus requires a trip to the doctor to get the most effective cure.

Pills

  • Toenail fungus can often be effectively treated with pills. The Mayo Clinic says that the three most common oral medications are Fluconazole Itraconazole and Terbinafine. They are only available by prescription, but they can promote new nail growth when taken for up to 12 weeks. They can fix the part of the toenail that has already been affected by fungus, so it can take several months before the cure is complete. This happens when a new, uninfected toenail has completely grown out.

Creams

  • Prescription creams can be an effective cure for toenail fungus when used along with pills. They don't cure the problem on their own; the Mayo Clinic says they work by promoting healing if they are used along with a prescription oral treatment. They can also be used with over-the-counter urea creams to help them be absorbed into the toenail more rapidly.

Lacquers

  • Some doctors will prescribe an anti-fungal lacquer to be painted on the affected toenails. This topical medication is not as effective as pills, but it can cure toenail fungus if it is applied consistently until the provlem is resolved. The anti-fungal lacquer is used just like nail polish. It is applied with a brush to the infected toenail and the surrounding skin once per day for an entire week. This allows several layers of medication to build up. The layers are removed at the end of the week, and you repeat the process by applying new layers. While anti-fungal lacquer can be an effective cure, it may take up to a year of consistent use to eliminate the problem completely.
